ROOT CANALS

aftercare

Aftercare following a root canal treatment is essential to ensure proper healing and the long-term success of the procedure. Here are some general aftercare instructions:

Avoid Chewing on the Treated Tooth

Refrain from chewing on hard or sticky foods with the treated tooth until permanent restoration, such as a dental crown, is placed. This helps protect the tooth and prevents temporary filling or crown damage.

Take Prescribed Medications

Follow any prescribed medications, such as antibiotics or pain relievers, as directed by your dentist or endodontist to manage discomfort and prevent infection.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Regularly brush and floss your teeth to maintain oral hygiene and prevent infection. Pay particular attention to the treated tooth, ensuring it remains clean and plaque buildup-free.

Be Mindful of Discomfort

It is normal to experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity in the treated tooth and surrounding area for a few days following the root canal procedure. However, if you experience severe or persistent pain, swelling, or other unusual symptoms, contact your dentist promptly for evaluation.

Attend Follow-Up Appointments

Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist or endodontist to monitor the healing process and ensure the success of the root canal treatment.
These appointments may involve checking the temporary or permanent restoration and evaluating the tooth’s health.

Maintain a Soft Diet

Stick to a soft diet for the first few days after the root canal procedure to minimise discomfort and reduce the risk of dislodging the temporary filling or crown. Opt for easy-to-chew foods like soups, yoghurt, and smoothies.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours after the root canal procedure, as these habits can hinder the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

Protect the Tooth

Once the permanent restoration, such as a dental crown, is placed, avoid biting or chewing on hard objects with the treated tooth to prevent damage to the restoration.

By following these aftercare instructions and attending regular dental checkups, you can help ensure the success of your root canal treatment and maintain optimal oral health for years to come.

If you have any concerns or notice any changes with your teeth, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist for guidance and assistance.

Vicky Sudlow is not just a dentist; she's a dental artist. Her passion for her craft is evident in every appointment. She takes the time to thoroughly explain each procedure, ensuring I felt comfortable and informed every step of the way. Vicky's attention to detail is remarkable, and her commitment to delivering top-notch care is truly unmatched. But the excellence doesn't end with Dr. Sudlow. Kim, her dental nurse, is an absolute gem. Kim's warmth and professionalism put me at ease during every visit. She is a crucial part of the team, assisting seamlessly with procedures and ensuring that each appointment runs smoothly. Her friendly demeanour makes the dental experience surprisingly enjoyable.

Fantastic dental work done to my front tooth. Nicky is a magician of the dentistry world. Won’t recommend work unless you really need it. Been a patient for many many years now and wouldn’t go anywhere else. Only gripe is Denplan fees are astronomical each month.
